How about a little bar at the bottom of the tile to indicate the app is running? It would go with the Metro theme.
Alternatively, a little triagular fold in the corner of the tile would work too.

It's an okay idea, but not great. I'm not sure if this is any better but maybe there should be a pinned app listing all running applications (a simplified taskmanager)?

This looks great, however I think for this type of functionality the indicator needs to be very noticeable. When you glance at the screen you should instantly know what is running and what is not.

How's the Win 8 Developer Preview? I've heard very bad opinions.

its brilliant!.
everything just works!
try it for urself...
dont listen to those ppl
they dont give it a real try and just say bad things
the old windows is always there in the back.
and the new additions is for easy tasks and will work wonders on a tablet PC.
also
the old windows is also faster and uses less resources than win7 :)

I had not seen your concepts yet, being too busy trying everything with Windows dev prev :D

It also gives me thousands of ideas, so I may also post some concepts on dA ^^ I'm already working on the Windows Explorer, but I wish to make a different versions of the metro start page ^^

I really like your idea, and actually I think the released version truly lacks options and indicators. We can't easily end the process of a launched app, or close it directly, and yes we don't know what apps are launched (unless you go in the task manager).
This indicators would be great, and I think when you right-click on the icon, to show the options on bottom, there should be the option to end its process, or to close it.

I like your light version, it blends well with the metro ui, it's there but doesn't pop-up, and that's great :)

I am also thinking about reimagining metro UI but its too much work to remake icons and all that :P

I think active apps should have a 'glow' effect around the edges.

it came to my mind too :)
but it will require a strong glow to actually be visible and the tiles UI will be effected by it. The simplicity will be reduced.

Oh, I wasn't thinking of a glow around the borders, I was thinking of a glow within the borders. Like, having the have a glow effect, fading inward to the normal tile's color.

i tried that.
it wasnt bad ...
but takes away from the Metro styling.

Well, either way, it doesn't really matter what apps are actually 'open' in Windows 8, given the nature of the OS.

it matters if there is a way to close them. I dont want to cycle through 5 6 apps just because i had opened them and now cant close.

I like this idea except is still a little hard to see. Maybe a shadow below the active box. Also you could try adding a gradient to the corner of the box like Zune does to album art.

i tried gradient. it looked too flashy.
i also tried a triangle thingy.. but it will reduce alot of eyecandy.
shadow will be too distracting.
im thinking of something else :)

btw thank u for the suggestions :)

No Problem, also here is my attempt with a stroke and gradient. Also what about removing the stroke on the squares when inactive and having a stroke when active.

it looks nice :)
but it looks kind of glassy!..
and thats what MS is running away from.
But great idea. Im gonna try to do something about it.
A solid Stroke would look alot better i think .. with the rest of the UI

Yeah to me a black stroke at 20% or 30% opacity looks good and would help with the twitter and tile puzzle stroke that ends up looking blurry on that green background.

but if the background is black that will be impossible to see. or difficult

Yeah so you should only see the normal stroke or just the square. Basically the black low opacity stroke just helps distinguish the stroke from the background. But one of the problems is that if you have a light stroke on the square then the low opacity stroke will make it look blurry on a white background. So to me it might be best to have the squares darken or lighten when active. You could also try making the icon be a 50% opacity then have it turn white when active.
